What do I do exactly?

Tuning! How much does it cost?

All pianos are different~! And all pianos have different needs. — Tuning can be easy or it can be very difficult and take a long time! As such, the pricing can very.

Most manufacturers recommend you tune your piano every six months, and if you keep to that schedule;

A standard tuning takes about three hours and costs 180$

But if the piano hasn’t been tuned in a while, it may take multiple tuning passes to get the piano up to pitch, and more importantly, for it to stay there! We call those harder tunings “pitch corrections”

Pitch corrections can range from 240$ - 300$ Depending on how many passes it takes to get the piano up to pitch!

How Do I know If I Need a Pitch Correction?

Good news! I don’t charge anything for a quote! I can take a look tell you exactly how much it will cost before you’re on the hook for anything!

But if you prefer to measure it yourself! Go ahead and download a free tuning app!

Now measure the A above Middle C. It should read pretty close to 440hz, but if it reads below 438.5hz or above 442.5, your piano may need a pitch correction!

Regulation?

Regulation is the process of ‘optimizing’ or ‘modifying’ the playability of the piano. It can be a long process, and solve many problems that a pianist might have. — For instance, some notes feeling ‘light’ when played, while some notes feel ‘heavy’.

If you think you may need a regulation, it’s important to ask a technician that is familiar with your instrument, the kind of music that is played on it, and your playing style!

We can only optimize the piano for you, if we know what you’d like out of it!

Voicing

Voicing is the process of modifying the sound the piano makes when it’s played! Very often this involves either making the hammers themselves physically softer or harder in specific spots to modify their tone.

It’s important to get the piano tuned and regulated before voicing is ever considered. Very often bad tone is a result of the piano action parts, and not necessarily the hammers themselves!

This is best done by a technician that really knows you and your instrument! It’s hard to make confident change, without first knowing exactly what you’d like out of your instrument!

If you feel like you may need some voicing done, ask your technician for the next steps!

Cleaning

Cleaning is also something that can vary in price because of sheer scope!

A standard cleaning will run you 180$ — That includes cleaning the action, keys, around tuning pins, hitch pins, the soundboard, keyframe, the keybed, and of course the box the piano comes in as well! — And polishing some of the brass keyframe pins while I’m at it too!

Where cleaning can deviate in price is whether or not there is any evidence of mice. — If there is, then the price doubles! I don’t like mice!
